Junior league promotes health

Amy Layne and Jeanette Baumgartner pass out apples to Horizen Elementary students Abby and Molly Bates. An apple a day keeps the doctor a way.

An apple a day keeps the doctor a way.

That’s why the Junior League of Huntsville started Apple Annie Day, an annual fundraiser to support Junior League programs.

Each year in October, JLH members go out to schools in Madison County to deliver apples. Apple Annie week was from Oct. 18 to Oct 22, and its purpose was to promote healthy eating habits in Madison County schools. The week came to an end with Apple Annie Day, where JLH members visited every school in the city of Madison on Friday, Oct. 22, and gave apples to all students.

“Alabama is one of the leading states for childhood obesity,” said Amy Layne, junior league member. “That’s what made the Junior League focus on healthy eating habits. Our childrens’ obesity is growing faster here than in other states.”

She said Apple Annie raises about $20,000 for the Junior League. Money, Layne said, that goes into the community.

This is the seventh year the leaguers have delivered to schools. The ladies wear red leggings, denim skirt, red t-shirt and bandana.

Layne said they delivered 6,000 apples to students.
