Mustangs shuffle Sheffield for first round victory

After falling in the regular-season finale to Class 4A West Limestone, the Madison Academy Mustangs rebounded to shut out Sheffield High School, 35-0, in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Neither team scored in the opening quarter, but Madison Academy got most of its touchdowns in the second quarter. A recovered fumble by Marcus Sease  put the ball in Madison’s hands, which led to a Kam Jackson to put the Mustangs up 7-0.

A 39-yard pass from Joe Dobson to Chris Clouser set up a Dobson rushing touchdown to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead.

Jake Hamlett increased the Mustangs’ lead to 21-0 at the half following a rushing touchdown late in the second quarter.

Still lagging behind, Sheffield put up a good fight in the third quarter by recovering a fumble and intercepting a pass, but it wasn’t good enough.

Dobson scored again from the 1-yard line, putting the team up 28-0 in the third, before tacking on the final touchdown in the fourth quarter on another run.

“We’ve just been taking it week by week,” said head coach Eric Cohu. “Even though it wasn’t perfect, the players played a good, consistent game during the four quarters.”

Cohu said the team responded well, even though Sheffield was fast and had a good offense.
The Mustangs will stay at home Hov. 12 for the second round of the Class 3A playoffs against Lauderdale County.
“We have a great history with Lauderdale County and they match up well against us,” Cohu said. “They are a three yards and a cloud of dust kind of team. They are going to line up and run right at us.”
