Overcash named as the Madison City Council president
Tommy Overcash, the District 5 representative for the Madison City Council, was named as the new council president Monday, Nov. 8.
Overcash replaces Bill Holtzclaw, who resigned Monday to assume his new role as the state senator for District 2.
“It is truly with mixed emotions that I submit my resignation,” Holtzclaw said at the beginning of the meeting. “It has been truly an honor and a privilege. It’s what I call a high-water mark. I thank you for the opportunity to serve alongside you.”
President Pro-Tem Jerry Jennings handled the transition, and he thanked Holtzclaw for his service to the council and the city.
“You did an outstanding job,” Jennings said.
The District 7 seat will remain vacant until public interviews are conducted.
Overcash said he expects a new District 7 representative to be named by the December 13 meeting.
Anyone interested in filling the vacancy must live in District 7. Interested parties should contact City Clerk Melanie Williard at 256-772-5610.
