Congressman delivers cookies

Culinary students at Bob Jones present Congressman Brooks with cookies to deliver to sailors.

Seamen aboard the George H.W. Bush will enjoy treats this weekend, freshly baked by Madison students.

Congressman Mo Brooks visited Bob Jones High School and Whitesburg Middle School on Feb. 3 to collect the baked goods and will personally deliver them to the sailors this weekend.

“Our kids were so excited to meet Congressman Brooks as well as find out how their treats would make it aboard a carrier in the Atlantic,” said Julie Finley, assistant principal at Bob Jones High School.

The congressman will fly on a small plane that will land directly onto the ship. He will spend the weekend and watch the Super Bowl with the sailors.

Home economics students at Whitesburg Middle School presented the congressman with 150 brownies to deliver, and culinary students from Bob Jones High School contributed 180 cookies in Alabama and Auburn shapes.

“Our Super Bowl happens in November,” Brooks laughed.

The cookies were individually packaged with a note reading: “We thank you for your bravery and dedication to our great nation. You and your families continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. Sweet home Alabama.”

“I’m sure our war fighters will appreciate it,” Brooks said.
