School make-up day set for May 31

Madison City School students will have to add another day on to their school calendar this year.

Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler broke the news at the March 9 meeting that the make-up day will be May 31.

Students missed Feb. 10 due to inclement winter weather.

The good news: the make-up day will only be half a day.

“Everyone in the community has a different idea as to what is best,” Fowler said. “We have looked at several different options as to how to make this day up.”

A close choice was to make-up the day on a Saturday, but Fowler said the Federal Wage and Hour Laws would require the system to pay an extra $15,000 to $20,000 in overtime to staff.

“That’s just not a viable option for us,” Fowler said.

“One of the things I was concerned about was that to not have this being a wasteful day,” he said. “We want to try to make every day as productive as we can.”

He said he knows some people already have that day penciled into their calendar for vacation, so if parents had any hardships and needed their child t take exams earlier, they could work something out with the teacher.
