Serving up sight

The world looks a little bit brighter to two Discovery Middle School students.

Two students were selected by the Lions Club of Madison to receive eyeglasses for free.

“One of the cornerstone of the Lions Club is helping people who can’t afford it to see better,” said Michelle Campbell of the Madison Lions Club.

Another member, Dr. Daniel Placzek of the WalMart Vision Center, provided the eye exams to the students free of charge.

Placzek said one of these students’ vision impairments was so bad his vision was limited to 16 inches in front of his face without glasses.

The doctor tried to suggest a pair of fashionable glasses, but the student was not concerned with looks.

Placzek said the student told him, “I don’t care what I look like. I just want to see.”

“That makes what I do worthwhile,” Placzek said.

The Lions Club and the Lions Club Foundation International have improved eye care for more than 100 million people worldwide by training more than 650,000 eye care professionals, building 315 eye hospitals and upgrading hundreds of eye clinics, according to their website.
