Johnson re-appointed to school board, MCDAB gives out awards

The Madison City Council reappointed Dr. Terri Johnson back to her position on the Board of Education for Madison City Schools Monday night.

Johnson will serve another five-year term.

“This is not something that I took for granted,” Johnson said after the meeting. “I saw the resumes of people that applied and I know that there are a lot of people interesting in serving our children.”

Johnson has also been a member of the board’s finance committee for five years.

“I’m very appreciative that the council had confidence in the work that I’ve already done, and extended that confidence to keep on serving,” she said.

District 5 Councilman Tommy Overcash expressed his satisfaction with the other applicants who were up for the position.

“We’re very blessed to have had a large crop of people to apply,” Overcash said. “We had the best candidates we’ve ever had.”

District 1 Representative Tim Holcombe said narrowing the pool down to four finalists was not easy.

“They were all exceptional individuals and would have served well,” he said.

Although school’s about to dismiss for summer, Johnson said the board still has a full work slate ahead.

“We set our goals for the next year, we evaluate the goals that we had for the previous year and we’ve got that wonderful new high school,” she said. “There’s never any downtown, but it’s very exciting.”

The Madison City Disability Advocacy Board presented its annual Personal, Service, Faith and Inspiration awards.

Dr. Bert Breland, minister of First Baptist Church of Madison won the Faith award. Madison City Schools special education teacher Linda Johnson and Mike Hannan of the VIP Soccer Program both won the Personal Service award. Three people, Jessica Plank Aviagen, Leah Underwood and Shannon Roberts, won the Inspiration award.
