MADISON — Huntsville Hospital has named David Hergenroeder as “Athlete of the Year.”

Hergenroeder graduated from Bob Jones High School in May.

During the school year, Huntsville Hospital selects an Athlete of the Week. High school seniors can apply who maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average, demonstrate athletic and academic accomplishments and volunteer in their communities. Male and female winners then are chosen for the year (huntsvillehospital.org).

Hergenroeder’s female counterpart is Lydia Eubanks of Ardmore High School. Huntsville Hospital chose Eubanks and Hergenroeder from 32 athletes who were athletes of the week.

Huntsville Hospital commended Hergenroeder for never allowing an opportunity to pass and showing willingness to accept new tasks. “Even with a full workload in the classroom, his commitment to three school sports teams and his community responsibilities, you get the feeling that David Hergenroeder thrives on making the most of time,” a hospital press release stated.

At Bob Jones, Hergenroeder served as team captain for cross-country and led the squad to the Alabama State Meet the past three years. He also was instrumental in the indoor track team’s vie at the state championships. On the soccer field, Hergenroeder was a formidable runner as a Patriots varsity starter; he was recognized on the All-Metro Team.

Hergenroeder earned a 4.9 GPA and was recognized twice as a National AP Scholar for rigorous advanced placement courses. He is a National Merit finalist, Presidential Scholar semifinalist and National Honor Society member. Hergenroeder was selected for the U.S. Department of State’s National Strategic Language Initiative Scholarship to study for seven weeks in China to learn Mandarin Chinese.

In other honors, he earned the Wendy’s Heisman Award, DAR awards, Student Government Association representative and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

This fall, he will enter Yale University to study engineering.

Hergenroeder received a $1,000 scholarship from D1, Huntsville Hospital and The Orthopaedic Center (TOC).
