MADISON- The game had all the makings of a Friday night high school football playoff game. There were touchdowns, interceptions, great runs, and some great catches.
The touch football game that went down to the final play wrapped up the fifth annual Kevin Rose youth football camp Thursday morning at the Bob Jones turf field.
Seventy five kids age K through sixth grade went through the six hours of football instruction over three days.
“The kids come out and we create an atmosphere where they can have as much fun as possible and learn football so when they get to us they are ahead of the curve,” said Bob Jones head football coach Kevin Rose.
“We do some skills competitions where the kids can earn awards. We play air football games and try to create a fun competitive environment and they have a big time with it,” said Rose who came up with the idea to award footballs instead of trophies.
“These are our future Bob Jones Patriots,” Rose said. “These same guys we see here in our camp will be scoring touchdowns for Bob Jones four or five years down the road.”
One play stood out for Rose. His son Caden had an interception as the clock ticked down on the final game.
Current Patriots Tyler Brutofsky and Dylan Haraway pitched in to quarterback the two teams in the game. The youngsters went through skills competitions by ages with the winners awarded footballs. Kids could also earn a coveted football with hustle awards.
Mike Murrah of Madison Youth Football talked to the kids about opportunities to play organized football in the fall. There are teams for any age group Murrah said. There are eight teams in MYF and no kids are turned away if they want to play football. They play teams from Madison Academy and Westminster Christian Academy among other teams.
MYF games are played at Dublin Park.
With the youth camp wrapped up, Rose can now turn his attention to hosting the North Alabama Elite 7 on 7 Competition to be held June 19-20. Defending champion Madison Academy will be back as will teams from Sparkman, Buckhorn, Colbert County and Bob Jones will have three teams. Twelve teams in all will compete.
Games will start at 9 A.M. on the practice fields north of Eastview Drive. Afternoon sessions both days will be on the turf field behind the school.
Rose said that he will take his best players from the 7-on-7 tournament to Vanderbilt for the Music City Classic July 12-13.
