Doom was interested in this position after enjoyable visits to Madison and Huntsville. “I heard nothing but good things about the Madison community,” she said. Also, youth services has “the most imaginative literature.”

Her duties all connect with “needs of the younger members of the Madison community. I really enjoy reading at storytime, planning new events for teens and helping readers find the right book,” Doom said.

Previously, she worked one year for Nashville Public Library as practicum student, circulation assistant and finally children’s programming assistant. Doom worked primarily at the Bellevue branch.

Many of Madison’s existing youth programs “are spectacular,” she said. “I wouldn’t want to change a thing.” Doom does plan to introduce new “and hopefully fun programs for teens.”

“However, it’s my goal to help younger community members realize the library is most definitely there for them, too,” Doom said. “They should feel welcome at any time at their Madison library.”

Doom earned a bachelor’s degree in communication at the University of Kentucky and a master’s degree in library and information studies at the University of Alabama. “I consider the South my hometown,” Doom said about living in New Orleans; Owensboro, Ky.; Tuscaloosa; Nashville; and, most recently, Franklin, Tenn.

“The amazing sense of community down here” has surprised Doom about Madison. “I’ve never seen such an active and compassionate community. It’s almost like something from a Normal Rockwell painting or a Frank Capra film. It’s refreshing and uplifting to see such an involved group of people.”

Doom’s consuming passions are “watching way too much television, reading amazing books, occasionally painting and writing different tales about funny heroes from other worlds having pretty stupendous adventures. And singing … can’t go a single day without singing some tune.”

The young writers’ group will hold its first meeting on Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. For more information, call 256-461-0046 or email to rdoom@hmcpl.org.
