Board studies new accountability model for Alabama schools
MADISON – With the demise of No Child Left Behind, Madison City Schools and other Alabama districts now face the state’s Plan 2020 Accountability and Assessment Model.
Reporting on the model, coordinator of auxiliary services Bob Lipinski updated the board at its Oct. 29 meeting. Lipinski and the district’s instruction committee have reviewed the model’s priorities for “Alabama’s 2020 Learners, Support Systems, Professionals and Schools/Systems” for implementation over four years.
Each district must report on “School Performance Index” or SIP that is based on grade span, achievement proficiency, gap and attendance. “With this new model, all school districts must grow show growth for all students, as opposed to No Child Left Behind,” board member Ranae Bartlett said. In other announcements, Madison has open slots for an instructional partner and Spanish teacher for elementary students.
Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler discussed his 2013-2014 goals. In technology, the superintendent and staff will “define the direction of digital learning for the district.” For instruction, “Alabama College and Career Ready Standards and Common Core will launch students for success,” Fowler said. The board agreed.
In business actions, the board approved purchases for a sports utility vehicle, $33,066.50, Long Lewis Ford; security doors, $136,691.13, Pettus Plumbing and Piping Inc.; Columbia Elementary School’s soccer field grassing, $42,968.52 and irrigation, $15,745.63 by Pro-Rain Irrigation Services Inc.; and mold remediation at Discovery Middle School, $27,120, Indoor Air Technologies.
The board also approved termite control contracts with The Bug Doctor for several campuses.
Bart Williams with Early Works Museum presented $500 to the culinary department at Bob Jones High School for catering a reception at the museum.
By the end of November, the board will vote on the proposed calendar for the 2014-2015 school year. The proposal returns a fall break to the schedule.
