“Yam On It” team sets new Huntsville USBCA record

MADISON – There’s a new bowling Sheriff in town and the name is “Yam On It!”

The four-man team, with an unusual carrying name, broke the long-standing Huntsville USBCA record of team scratch series scores with a 2,974 total the squad rolled while participating in Thursday’s Men’s Classic League at Hartselle’s Family Games Bowling Center.

In three games, the team rolled 1008, 1050 and 916 for the new record setting total of 2,974. With their handicap for each player added for the handicap score, the scores were 1034, 1076 and 942 for a handicap total of 3,052. For the record, team members and their current handicaps are Aaron Nichols (9), Matthew Clayton (14), Mike Robbins (3) and A.J. Landis (0).

“We’ve been chasing that record for five years,” said Clayton, who teamed with Anna Tankersley of Madison in 2025 to set the new mixed team record. “We could have set the team record a year ago, but I rolled a miserable 642 series and that costed us.”

Once the team stepped onto the lanes there was a business-like attitude as they thought they had a good chance as all four have been rolling the ball well in recent outings. Clayton didn’t let down the team as he rolled the highest series of the four. Individually, team members posted scores of: Nichols (age 37) 225, 300, 188- 713, Clayton (38) 269, 215, 279- 763, Robbins (31) 235, 269, 235- 739, Landis (40) 279, 266, 214- 759.

Aaron’s 300 was not his first 300 game, but he did well since he has the lowest book average score on our team at 203,” said Clayton, who explained the team’s name of someone who gives every revolution possible on the ball. “We were all so very excited about setting the record I couldn’t get to sleep until 2:00 a.m. Our actual goal is to roll a score of 3,000 scratch.”
