Dowagers and dukes alike can join library’s ‘Downton Abby’ Fan Club
MADISON – Devoted fans of the period television series, “Downton Abby,” can share their noble angst in a fan club at Madison Public Library.
The Downton Abby Fan Club will meet on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. New episodes air on Alabama Public Television on Sundays at 8 p.m.
In its fourth season, “Downton Abbey” is a British period drama created by Julian Fellowes and co-produced by Carnival Films and Masterpiece. “This fictional series depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era,” library programming clerk Teresa Allison said.
“‘Downton Abbey’ is the hottest thing going,” branch manager Sarah Sledge said about the reason for starting the club. “People are coming to the library looking for all things Downton related.”
The library staff wanted to give Downton enthusiasts an opportunity to connect. “We strive to watch and listen to what our patrons are asking for and respond to their wishes,” Allison said.
Fan club meetings don’t follow a set agenda. “When you get a room full of ‘Downton Abbey’ fans, there is no holding them back,” Allison said. “We have tea and biscuits and then chat, predict and relive the show.”
At a recent meeting, a topic of discussion examined how well Julian Fellowes has depicted the effects of the World War I on the British people. “This is a very enthusiastic group,” Allison said.
Downton Abbey fans come in all genders and from all generations. “The elements are ‘all things British,'” Allison said. Most viewers are British history enthusiasts and royal family fans.
Fellowes wrote “Downton Abbey” for television. “Since the series aired, many books have been written about it. The show has also brought attention to Highclere castle, where the show is filmed and the family who currently lives there,” Allison said.
