MADISON – Local educators can spend part of their summer vacation earning extra cash while helping students build their skills in math.

Teaching slots are open for the Madison City Mathematics Summer Camp on June 9-13. Students entering grades 3-6 are eligible for the camp.

The camp will be held at Mill Creek Elementary School. The morning camp will meet from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The afternoon camp’s hours are noon to 2:30 p.m. A work day is scheduled on June 4.

Two teachers will be hired for each grade. Both the morning and afternoon class will have 15 students maximum.

“We are considering connecting careers and math for each camp class — for instance, engineering and math or culinary arts and math,” coordinator and Mill Creek assistant principal Kacy McKay said. “You may have some wonderful ideas, and we will be open to any suggestions.”

Teacher pay will be $25 per hour for a seven-hour day.

On April 2, applications for teachers will be available in the front office of each elementary school in Madison. The applications ask about the teacher’s current work assignment. The teacher must explain strengths that qualify him or her as a good candidate to work as a camp teacher.

In addition, applicants must describe a math unit that he or she would like to teach. This unit should be a fun and exciting activity while teaching valuable math concepts.

Teachers should email applications to kmckay@madisoncity.k12.al.us. For more information about the Madison City Mathematics Summer Camp, call McKay at 256-774-4690.
