MADISON – James Clemens High School students proved they proficiently understand the Spanish culture and language during the 43rd annual Federation of Spanish Convention.

The University of Alabama hosted the convention on March 14. The contest allowed students “to compete against schools from all around Alabama in speaking, performance, written and artistic events,” Brittany M. Bankston said.

Bankston teaches Spanish II, Spanish III honors and pre-advanced placement Spanish IV at James Clemens.

James Clemens students who won awards were Abigail Howland, Victoria Bender, Andrew Nguyen, Katie Chavez, Eve Davis, Comaiija Edwards, Jeremy Crummie and  Saryneliz Cruz.

Traveling to compete in Tuscaloosa also “motivated students to use their acquired language, cultural knowledge and skills outside of the classroom. (They) celebrated world language learning,” Bankston said.

Major highlights at the federation convention were art and grammar competitions, literary recitation, sight reading, impromptu speaking, Culture Bowl, costume competition and T-shirt contest, along with dance, musical and theatrical sessions.

The James Clemens students primarily were interested in art, music and literary contests, Bankston said.

“Students were proud of their ability to use the Spanish they have learned in class to compete on such a grand level,” Bankston said. “Many were inspired to tell their friends how much fun the event is and to encourage them to participate next year.”

In addition, the teenagers were excited to show their musical and artistic talents. “We were proud that all students that participated in these competitions won awards,” Bankston said.
