MADISON – Hard work by the Madison Elementary School math teams paid off in rewarding times during contests and tournaments this year.

In the online Perennial Math Competition, the Madison elementary students competed with 3,053 other fifth- and sixth-graders and 137 teams from across the nation, fourth-grade teacher and sponsor Beth Woodard said.

The Perennial competition involves four monthly tests, each with six questions to answer in 30 minutes. “Madison elementary’s fifth- and sixth-grade team earned a plaque for scoring in the top 10 percent of all teams,” Woodard said.

Eight students earned a dog tag for individual scoring in the top 10 percent: Tom Teper, Justin Peel, Bradley Spindle, Josh Lin, Rohan Sen, Sherry Lee, Chris Woodard and Jackson Eames.

Teper and Woodard earned medals in a tie as the team’s top scorers.

Other team members in fifth grade are Conner White, Susan Xiao, Ari Hunt, Jackson Eames, Aidan Sims and Christian Reynolds. Other sixth-graders in the math team are Branwen Apgwilym, Hugh Mitchell and Amber Guo.

“I’m so incredibly proud of our team members,” Woodard said. “They have worked very hard this year and excelled as mathematicians.”

Randolph School’s mathematics department hosted the Raider Math Challenge on April 19. Students competed in both an individual test and a team round.

The individual test consisted of 25 multiple-choice problems and three free-response tiebreakers. In sixth grade, Teper earned fourth place; Spindle, sixth; and Sherry Lee, tenth. In fifth grade, Woodard took sixth place.

The sixth-grade team took third place and received a trophy. The team round included 30 problems in sets of 3. To receive each subsequent set, teams had to submit for the previous set.

“Problems in the team round increased in difficulty as the round progressed,” Woodard said.

The Madison elementary math teams will face their final tournament for the year at the University of Alabama in Huntsville on May 10.
