FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Madison City Board of Education approved Melissa Raby Mims of the Shelby County school system to replace Dr. Timothy Scott as principal of Madison Elementary, Madison City Schools recently announced in a press release. Scott accepted a job in Huntsville.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for Mims, who graduated from Sparkman High School and still has family in Harvest and the Madison area.

“Wesley and I are thrilled to be joining the family at Madison Elementary and are excited to be coming home to Madison County,” Mims said of her and her husband.
Madison Schools Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler said Shelby County School District Superintendent Randy Fuller had nothing but praise for Ms. Sims. A search committee reviewed 64 applicants, narrowed the list to 10 and interviewed six. Ms. Mims was the overwhelming choice.
Ms. Mims received her bachelors, masters and EdS degrees from Auburn University and her certificate for educational administration from the University of Montevallo. She spent the past six years as assistant principal at Chelsea Park Elementary in Shelby County and 8 years before that as an elementary classroom teacher for the Shelby County, Forsyth County (Ga) and Lee County school districts.
Judy Warmath, elementary coordinator for Madison City Schools, led the search committee. Warmath said others who have worked with Mims describe her as gifted, organized, positive, fair, trustworthy, supportive and visible every day in the classroom.

According to Ms. Warmath’s hiring recommendation report, the current principal at Chelsea Park, Dr. Jeanette Campisi-Snider, said of Mims: “She has a strong work ethic and knowledge of curriculum and instruction; she has drive and initiative, is a self-starter and energetic; she makes it a priority to be in the classrooms daily; and she built such strong relationships, that she was truly loved and respected.”

Mims said she’s excited about being hired and can’t wait to get started.
