MADISON – Columbia Elementary School’s faculty and PTA have devised a school-wide incentive for positive behavior, “Fun Day Friday.”

All Columbia students were invited to attend on Aug. 8, the first Friday of the school year. However, students’ participation on each future Fun Day Friday depends on their adherence to the incentive program, Columbia Principal Jamie Hill said.

Fun Day Friday uses a ‘ticket system.’ Each week, students in K-2 start with 10 tickets; grades 3-4, 5 tickets; and grades 5-6, 3 tickets.

A student loses a ticket for incomplete class work or misbehavior. If a student doesn’t have tickets left on Friday, the child will stay inside with a teacher.

Students who have tickets remaining on Friday “will participate in an ‘Astro celebration’ with his/her grade level from 2 to 2:30 p.m.,” Hill said. If students qualify for the Astro celebration throughout the month, they will receive a free treat from the PTA on the last Friday of the month.

PTA members are selling snacks for $1 that satisfy FDA guidelines 1, such as baked chips, crackers, cookies, popcorn, grain bars, applesauce and water.

At year-end, Columbia will have a “Big Blow-Out Celebration.” To participate, a student can miss only one Fun Day Friday per nine-week grading period. Therefore, a student could miss four fun days during the year and still attend the ‘blow-out.’

However, if a student misses two or more fun days in one quarter, the student cannot attend the year-end celebration.

Parents are welcome to attend Fun Day Friday but should register at the front office for a name tag sticker. Parents interested in volunteering should meet teachers in the designated location for the child’s grade and avoid going to classrooms.
