2015 Learning Expo to show area’s educational resources

HUNTSVILLE – Award-winning author Jarrett Krosoczka will be keynote speaker for Rocket City Mom’s 2015 Learning Expo on Jan. 31 at the Davidson Center at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

Representatives from local independent schools, preschools and home-schooling organizations will answer questions and give details about their programs and students from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Learning Expo is free and open to the public.

Rocket City Mom compiles and publishes news about educational and recreational opportunities for area children (rocketcitymom.com, Facebook/Rocket City Mom). Creator Jennifer Breuer founded the site in 2010.

“Parents and students alike can explore all of their local educational options at the expo booths set up underneath the Saturn V Rocket,” Rocket City Mom editor Stephenie Walker said. Performers and exhibitors will entertain at a demo stage.

Dr. Philip Kovacs, associate professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and vice president of Appleton Learning, will discuss “Extending Your Child’s Learning Beyond the Classroom.” Susan Bacon, founder of The Franklin School, will speak about home schooling in Alabama.

Cathy Miller with United Way will present “Let’s Get Ready for Kindergarten.” Elizabeth Taylor with College Counts will explain the 529 plan. A question-and-answer session will look at Huntsville City Schools’ magnet program.

Krosoczka has written and illustrated more than 25 books for young readers. He is a two-time winner of the Children’s Choice Book Award. His work includes several picture books, the “Lunch Lady” graphic novels and “Platypus Police Squad” novel series.

“Jarrett has given two TED Talks, which have been curated to the main page of TED.com,” Walker said. He hosts “The Book Report with JJK” on SiriusXM radio.

Krosoczka’s work has been featured in “The Boston Globe” and on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” “Newsweek,” “The New York Times” and “USA Today” have endorsed his books.
