MADISON – In recognition of Alabama’s Arbor Week, Madison Beautification and Tree Board will present the Home Landscape Design Seminar at Dublin Park on Feb. 19.

The free seminar will feature two sessions.

Gerald Clark, landscape architect and member of Madison City Council, will present “Home Landscape Design Primer” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Clark will explain how to survey a home site and draft a basic landscape plan.

Clark also will discuss tips, tools and tactical considerations for a homeowner to know whether to pursue do-it-yourself projects or to work with a landscape professional for lawn improvements.

Clark studied at Auburn University and works as a land architect at Goodwyn Mills and Cawood. He has designed interstate interchanges, greenways and downtown streetscapes, including Explorer Boulevard, Farrow Road and the canal extension at Big Spring Park.

From 7 to 8:30 p.m., Harvey Cotten will present “Trees in the Home Landscape.” During Cotten’s sessions, attendees will learn about the vital role that trees play in a successful home landscape and about their form, function and texture. He also will detail the basics of tree planting, staking and watering.

Cotten earned a bachelor’s degree in horticulture at Mississippi State University. For 16 years, Cotten served as chief operating officer at Huntsville Botanical Garden.

Cotten is author of “Easy Gardens for the South” and is available as a consultant. Local gardeners welcome his gardening knowledge and tips on his weekly segment on WAAY-TV.

Attendees will be eligible for door prizes. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Space is limited. To register, visit Facebook/Madison Beautification Board and click the registration link (http://goo.gl/forms/7nZVeqlfHi).

Madison Beautification and Tree Board officers are president Karen Dugard-Lawler, beautification vice president Alice Tucker, tree board vice president Lynda Johnston, treasurer Julie Ray and secretary Karen Forsyth. Board members include Meredith Kilby, Linda Kinney, Beth Agee, Marsha Harris and Brenda Buschmann. Gerald Clark is council advisor.

Alabama will observe Arbor Week on Feb. 23-27. National Arbor Day is April 24.
