MADISON – Kathryn Champion will guide Bob Jones High School students to their futures as college and career advisor.

Since 2012, Champion has worked as an admissions recruiter at the University of Alabama. She enjoyed working with high school students although that direct interaction was brief. “Working alongside other guidance counselors, I began to respect, more and more, their role in our students’ decision-making process,” she said.

“I wanted to be a part of that … and see a student through, from start to finish,” Champion said. She also wanted a position requiring less travel and “to become more rooted and involved in the community.”

At Bob Jones, Champion will assist students in the college application and decision process, counseling and relaying details about scholarships, financial aid and standardized test preparation.

At UA, she performed similar work but “on the other side of the desk.” She traveled throughout East Alabama to meet students from all backgrounds. Usually, “when students got to me, they were completing applications and applying for scholarships with a heavy interest in UA,” Champion said.

“I definitely think my exposure to collegiate standards and practices has prepared me to assist Bob Jones students and parents take necessary steps as they prepare for the future,” Champion said.

Champion earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UA. Her hometown is Montgomery. As a new resident of Madison, she is “anxious to be a part of and get involved in the community of Madison.”

Baking is a favorite pastime, especially new recipes in “Southern Living” magazine. “I enjoy all types of music and traveling around to see my favorite bands live. Some would refer to me as a ‘foodie,’ since I enjoy visiting new cities and checking out local restaurants, Champion said.

Champion has worked in mission trips in different parts of the world. “That’s something I am passionate about,” she said.

Champion replaces Sheila Roberts, who has transitioned to work as district college and career advisor at the Central Office.
