MADISON – Jill Heffernan, Madison resident and realtor who works in the area, was recently nominated as a Woman of the Year candidate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Huntsville Chapter this year.

Heffernan is poised to make the most of the opportunity, in much the same way she’s made the most of her time and energy since her own son, Avery, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) as an infant.

“In April he will turn 20. Because of the support from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, I want to give back,” Heffernan said.

Since 2007, Heffernan has volunteered with the LLS’s Huntsville chapter, participating in runs, walks and other events that require athletic prowess to help raise money for the cause.

“My first event with them was an Olympic distance triathlon,” she said.

Continuing the effort, Heffernan is sprinting toward her goal of $5,000 raised by June 4, which is the finale of the Man/Woman of the Year campaign. The winners will be announced at the grand finale event.

Though Heffernan is going up against “three or four” other women for the honor, she said the award is the last reason she could think of to raise money for LLS.

“I don’t want anybody to think that’s the big reason I’m doing it, because it couldn’t be more of the opposite,” she said.

Heffernan works for Keller Williams Realty and said checks payable to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society can be mailed to 1593 Hughes Road Suite A in Madison.

“I’m hopeful that the community will support the LLS because we actually have two children who will be honored at the event, so it’s really all about the kids,” Heffernan said, referring to two North Alabama children with a type of blood cancer who will be honored at the grand finale event.
