MADISON – Madison City Chess League has scheduled the 2015 Summer Knights Chess Camp, which is open to kindergartners through high school seniors.

Camp dates are July 22-24. Rainbow Elementary School will host the activities.

Based on player skills, five different camp sessions will be offered. All camps will meet on July 22-24.

The “Learn to Play Chess” camp will meet from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. “This camp will teach basics, how pieces move, point values and rules,” league executive director Ranae Bartlett said. “This camp is designed for students who want to learn how to play and who want to join school chess clubs.”

League instructor Noel Newquist will direct the learn-to-play camp. Fee is $75, which includes a workbook.

“Beginner Competition Chess” participants will have a rating below 500 with United States Chess Federation (USCF). Meeting from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., the camp will focus on how to set and avoid opening traps, strategy, endgames and tournament preparation.

“Beginner Competition Chess” is “designed for players who have competed in USCF chess,” Bartlett said. League instructor Dr. Paul Mulqueen will lead. Fee is $100.

“Intermediate Competition Chess” will 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for players with USCF ratings from 500 to 1,000. Players with tournament experience will attend this session. Guest instructor will be Danny Rensch, vice president of Chess.com. Fee is $100.

“Advanced Competition Chess” will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. for players with USCF ratings above 1,000. “This camp is designed for players who frequently play in tournaments,” Bartlett said. Rensch will instruct campers. Fee is $100.

“Recreation Chess” from 1 to 4 p.m. will focus on the player who wants to play chess for fun and has very little to no competitive chess playing experience. Campers will learn basic chess rules, objectives, strategy and openings.

The “Recreation Chess” camp “will encourage kids to play against each other and have fun. It’s great for getting kids ready to join a school chess club,” Bartlett said. Newquist will instruct. Fee is $75.
