MADISON COUNTY – Branches of Huntsville-Madison County Public Library will observe Black History Month with music, genealogy and storytelling.

“Our 12 branches will honor contributions of African-American citizens with a wide variety of events for all ages,” communications director Ann Marie Martin said.

Classes in African-American genealogy will meet in Special Collections department, third floor of the downtown library in Huntsville on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m., Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. and Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. For Information, call 256-532-2360 or email rwhite@hmcpl.org.

Madison Public Library will conduct “Honoring Black History Month Celebration” programs. Children are invited to create artwork on Feb. 14 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Youngsters will recite poetry on Feb. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m.

On Feb. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m., Madison will host storytelling, followed by an African dance, rhythm and musical experience for all ages. Admission is free. Rosie’s International Services, Inc. is sponsor. For information, call 256-461-0046 or email madison@hmcpl.org.

Leon Crayton will discuss his experiences as a Tuskegee Airman in World War II on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. at Oscar Mason Library, 149 Mason Court. For information, call 256-535-2249 or email oscarm@hmcpl.org.

Brian Bess will offer an overview of “Huntsville’s Civil Rights Movement in the ’60s” on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at the downtown library. Admission is free.

On Feb. 27 downtown, the Black History Month Extravaganza begins with a session in Youth Services from 3 to 5 p.m. “Inventors Celebration Stations” will spotlight notable African-American inventors and “let kids make a craft,” Martin said.

From 5 to 8:30 p.m., master of ceremonies Reginald Lewis will direct performances by praise dancers from St. Bartley Primitive Baptist Church and Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church. Willie Smith will recite Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Francis Dillard will host an African apparel fashion show.

For the grand finale at 7 p.m., choirs of St. Bartley P.B. Church and First Missionary Baptist Church will be in concert. Tax Corp is sponsoring the free program.
