MADISON – Registration for Girl Scouts in the Madison area will be held on Aug. 23 at Asbury United Methodist Church.
Girls interested in the Scouting program should go to Asbury’s Hope Building, Room 215. At 5:30 p.m., parents of girls in kindergarten and first grade can register. The 6:30 p.m. time slot is scheduled for parents who have girls in second grade and older.
“This is an event for any and all girls and parents who are interested in their daughter getting involved with Girl Scouts in the Madison area,” spokesperson Staci Krupp said.
“We currently have almost 40 troops of various levels who service more than 350 girls in the City of Madison area. All of these troops are led by very dedicated volunteers,” Krupp said.
“Girl Scouts strive to instill the qualities of ‘Courage, Confidence and Character,'” Krupp said. In Girl Scouts, Krupp’s daughters “sampled everything, including the outdoor experience.”
Compared to a single sport, Scouting gives girls “a wide range of experiences that extend beyond classrooms, church and playing fields,” Krupp said. Krupp liked changes she saw in her daughters after they joined Scouts.
“Girl Scouts develop young women as community leaders by encouraging them to take action and be a force of change in the world,” Krupp said.
During troop meetings, possible activities are limitless. Most leaders tailor the agenda to the girls’ personalities and preferences or incorporate talents and hobbies that individuals bring to the troop.
Traditional practices include ceremonies, songs, crafts and learning leadership skills. For added bonuses, girls can pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills, environmental studies, business skills and interpersonal communication.
