MADISON – In her work as Assistant Principal at Bob Jones High School, Courtney Horton will strive to help other teachers and the students succeed in their endeavors.
Previously, she taught standard and advance classes of seventh-grade language arts at Discovery Middle School and worked as instructional partner at Liberty Middle School.
The opening at Bob Jones interested Horton because of her degree in counseling and knowledge of instruction. “This (position) seemed like a perfect fit for me. I really enjoy getting to know people and how I can help them be the best they can be,” she said.
Her focus as assistant principal will be curriculum and instruction. Horton will work with Bob Jones’ master schedule, curriculum catalog, advanced-placement (AP) coordinator, clubs and organizations, 504 facilitator, PTSA liaison and student intern placement.
Her writing has been published in Dr. Jim Knight’s book, “Focus on Teaching” and Learning Forward’s “Establishing Time for Professional Learning.” Horton was a presenter at the 2016 Model Schools Conference in Orlando, Fla. She served as regional facilitator for Alabama Instructional Partners Network and district facilitator for strategic teaching for new teachers.
“I’m very proud of my ability to create and foster relationships with students and other faculty members,” Horton said. “I feel this is important when entering a new building. I enjoy getting to know people and am genuinely interested in how I can help them succeed.”
Horton earned a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education from the University of Georgia, master’s degree in school counseling from University of West Alabama and an instructional leadership certificate from Jacksonville State University.
Her husband Bill works for Victaulic Company. Their children are Carson, 7, a second-grader at Columbia Elementary School and Meg, 5, a kindergartner at Columbia.
