MADISON – Volunteer slots are open for a couple of short-term projects that can instill patriotism and comfort the families of veterans who endangered or lost their lives for America’s freedom.
“The American Legion, Post 229 of Madison, is looking for volunteers to assist with placing flags and wreaths on our veterans’ gravesites located at the cemeteries in Madison,” Commander Carlos Woods said.
American Legion members will place the flags and wreaths at four cemeteries: Old Madison Cemetery, south side of Mill Road; Madison Cemetery, north side of Mill Road; Madison Memory Garden, on Hughes Road north of City Hall; and Faith Memorial Park on Madison Boulevard.
“This placing of flags is our first event, and only one event of four, that will continue through the Christmas holidays with the placing of wreaths in the month of December,” Woods said.
On Nov. 5 at 10 a.m., American Legion members ask that volunteers meet with them at Madison Memory Garden for placing flags that day. “The second event will be removing these flags on Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. We will meet at the same location, Madison Memory Garden,” Woods said.
Legionnaires ask for volunteers to place wreaths on Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. “We will conduct the ‘Placing of Wreaths’ assembly again at Madison Memory Garden. With this event, we will place wreaths on our veterans’ graves for Christmas,” he said.

The Christmas wreaths will stay in place until Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. when the legion again needs volunteers to remove the wreaths. Everyone will meet at Madison Memory Garden.

“American Legion Post 229 is asking for your support by volunteering your time. Normally, each event only takes about 2.5 hours,” Woods said.
Individuals who are interested in volunteering can contact Woods by calling 256-508-6548 or emailing woodscarlos12@gmail.com or Larry Vannoy by calling 256-468-8400 or emailing lvannoy06@gmail.com.
