MADISON – The City of Madison has closed the southbound lane of the Hughes Road overpass.
“The city has been closely monitoring this overpass due to shifting of the earth, which has caused cracks in the pavement, creating potentially unsafe conditions,” Gary Chenowyth said. Chenowyth works as Director of Engineering for the City of Madison.
“This closure is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of our residents,” Chenowyth said. “We apologize for any inconvenience.”
At the Madison City Council meeting on Nov. 14, Chenowyth discussed shifts of the Hughes Road overpass bridge. “The slope of the west side is stable, but the safety factor is not the way we want to see it.”
A topographic survey has been completed, and a geo-technical firm is studying cracks in the pavement and earth. “We do not see the bridge as an imminent danger to the public,” Chenowyth said.
