Patriots party at Louis Crews in win over Huntsville
HUNTSVILLE- Bob Jones continued their success at Louis Crews Stadium in Huntsville running their region record to 3-0 with a 34-20 win over Huntsville on Thursday night.
Bob Jones is unbeaten in three trips to Louis Crews, all wins over Huntsville. All the games are high scoring and this one was too as the teams combined for 47 points in the second half.
Bob Jones trailed 7-0 at halftime due in part to three turnovers. Two interceptions and one bad center snap stymied the offense but the Patriots defense held Huntsville to only one score. A goal line-stand just before half gave Bob Jones momentum.
“That stop turned the football game around,” said Bob Jones coach Kevin Rose. “Defensively we played great the first half. We played poorly on offense in the first half. I told them (at halftime) we were going to be more efficient and eliminate the turnovers and do things we do well. We usually play well over here and we came out in the second half and scored three straight drives.”
Caden Rose and Demontrez Brown led the turnaround. Brown took a throwback pass from Rose then threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Williams to get Bob Jones on the board.
Rose then led a drive that included a third down completion to Sam Barnes, passes to Brown, Dylan Ray, then Brown to the two-yard line where Rose ran for the touchdown. After a third straight Huntsville punt Bob Jones struck quickly as Rose hit Dylan Ray on a 24-yard crossing pattern to go up 21-7.
Jacob Guyton recovered a lightening kick that Huntsville fumbled and Rose hit Brown on an eleven-yard touchdown pass to go up 28-7.
“Caden did really well in the second half. He struggled in the first half but came out showed some poise and executed the offense. He did a good job of putting that first half behind him,” Kevin Rose said.
Rose hit 15 of 21 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 6 carries for 10 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Hatchett ran for 75 yards including a five-yard touchdown run late.
Bob Jones now enters the non-region game in week five against Florence with a 3-2 record but sitting on top of Class 7A Region 4 with a 3-0 record.
The second half of the season will begin with a huge home game against Hewitt-Trussville (Oct. 6) and homecoming against Grissom (Oct. 20).
If you would have told me we would be 3-0 in region playing 14 sophomores I would take it. No one gave us much of a chance the first 2 weeks and we lost but we have got better each week.”
Gavin Lewis has changed to #60 and played both ways offense and defense line. On offense he first was right guard then went to left tackle where he played most of the second half. Against Sparkman last week he played 74 snaps and likely played more than that against Huntsville.
“We have just had to piece together a football team with young guys and Gavin has been unselfish and played both ways,” Rose added.
