James Clemens can’t contain high powered Hewitt-Trussville

MADISON- Fourth-ranked Hewitt Trussville completed a sweep of the Madison high schools Friday night when they posted a 44-13 win over James Clemens. The Huskies finished 7-0 in Class 7A Region 4 for the second straight season. Earlier this season they defeated Bob Jones 52-18.

Hewitt Trussville started quickly with a pass and run touchdown pass from quarterback Paul Tyson to Logan Pitts that covered 78 yards. James Clemens mishandled the kickoff and the Huskies took over at the 15 yard line and struck quickly with a pass from Tyson to Dazalin Worsham. Still in the first quarter, Elliot McElwain had a 20-yard touchdown run and Hewitt led 21-0 before James Clemens even recorded a first down on offense. Myles Mason added a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 28-0 and kicker Parker Colburn booted a 27-yard field goal to make it 31-0 at halftime.

“Both Bob Jones and these guys played physical and both have a lot of great athletes. We scored a lot of points but it was hard earned,” said Hewitt-Tussville coach Josh Floyd. “Paul is playing great. It was windy tonight and it was tough throwing into or with the wind. It wasn’t perfect by any means but we will take the win.”

James Clemens played without three starting offensive linemen; Terrell Wynn, Mathew Burrow, and Zach Seals. The offense struggled gaining only 22 yards in the first half.

Quarterback Connor Cantrell got the offense moving in the third quarter hitting Trevor Hunziker on a deep pass. Devon Atkinson capped that drive with a 29-yard touchdown run. Atkinson rushed for over 100 yards despite missing the three offensive linemen.

James Clemens added a late touchdown on a pass from Cantrell to Chris Hope.

Colburn kicked a 49-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Hewitt-Trussville.

James Clemens coach Wade Waldrop challenged his team after the game to play up to the level Hewitt-Trussville is playing.

“They are physically a better football team than we are. When we are finished with this season we got to be motivated to get stronger because we got pushed around. Early on the pace of the game was too fast for us. The first couple of drives we had some busts. They are obviously the best team in our region so I wish them the best,” Waldrop said. “Our guys played hard, Devin had a great game. He has had two great games in a row.”

James Clemens will miss the playoffs for the first time in three years. They are 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the region. They will close the season at home against Austin Friday night.
