Huntsville Havoc’s Fox has played hockey around the world

MADISON – Hockey has taken Justin Fox around the world before he returned to Huntsville Havoc to play forward as a left winger.

“My hometown is Whitby, Ontario, east of Toronto. I’ve played hockey since I was three years old,” Fox said. “I’m now in my seventh year professionally, so it’s been a huge part of my life and shaping the person I am today.”

In 2011, Fox started his professional career with the Havoc and since has played with six teams on three continents. “We’re excited to bring Justin back to Huntsville,” Havoc Head Coach Glenn Detulleo said. “We expect him to play in all situations, as well as provide leadership on and off the ice.”

Fox came to Huntsville from the Dundee Stars in Scotland with Great Britain’s Elite Ice Hockey League. Fox (6-0, 190) played the two previous seasons with Fife Flyers in the EIHL. He played 115 games during his career in Scotland, recording 45 goals and 61 assists.

“Hockey has allowed me to do a bunch of traveling and live in some pretty amazing places,” Fox said. “I’ve lived in many cities across the United States, but my two favorites would probably be Chicago and Boston.”

“Most recently, I played three seasons in the United Kingdom, lived in a town outside Edinburgh, Scotland and spent a summer in Perth, Australia,” he said.

Hockey is Canada’s national pastime and a sport that everyone is associated with — one way or another. “Whether it be playing the game or supporting your hometown team,” Fox said.

At Oswego State University in New York, he earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations and marketing. “I’ve always been a people person and wanted to work for a major brand like Nike or a sports team in the promotion department,” Fox said.

Q & A

Q: What are your favorite restaurants?

A: The Scene at Monaco Pictures. “Great food. It’s usually a good place to go before heading to a movie,” Fox said.

Q: What’s your favorite food?

A: Definitely pizza. “I’ve always been a huge pizza guy,” he said.

Q: What are your favorite sports teams?

A: Hockey – Toronto Maple Leafs. Baseball – Toronto Blue Jays. Football – Pittsburgh Steelers.

Q: What’s your favorite sports memory?

A: “In my second year (with) the Havoc, I had returned from a call up to the East Coast League, and our team went on a magical run to the SPHL Finals. Although we didn’t win, it was a great run and included one of the best moments of my sports career scoring a goal with seconds left to send us to a deciding game in front of a sold-out Von Braun Center crowd,” Fox said.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: “I’m a huge movie guy, whether going to the movies with the guys or just watching them at home,” he said. “I like to keep up-to-date with what’s coming out.”
