Wesson To Play Lacrosse With Veterinary School At Mississippi State

MADISON- Caitlin Wesson knows how important pets are to those who have one. “Losing a pet is like losing a family member,” said Wesson.

Her love for the caring of animals has become a top priority for the James Clemens senior and she has been accepted into Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine’s Early Entry Program earning a full academic scholarship. She hopes to earn an undergraduate degree in engineering and proceed directly to veterinary school.

“We lost a couple animals in the past and the vet always allowed me to go in the back and see how things were completed,” said Wesson. “I attended a couple veterinary camps and really got a closer look at what it’s really like to be a veterinarian.”

Wesson, the daughter of Troy and Theresa Wesson, is also looking to play for the Bulldogs’ intramural women’s lacrosse team. She just completed her senior season of playing for the James Clemens’ club team as a defender and posted 21 ground balls and 11 forced turnovers. She began playing lacrosse after seeing a demonstration while attending Mill Creek Elementary School.

“I did play basketball, but after seeing that demonstration I chose to pursue lacrosse instead,” said Wesson, who stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 160 pounds. “I enjoy the mental aspect of the game and I feel lacrosse makes me a well-balanced person.”

Wesson is looking to zero-in on her role in her community as she has plans to pursue a career as a small animal veterinarian and open her own practice. She said joining the Biomedical Academy at James Clemens really led her to make the decision on what she wanted as a career. Headed into graduation she carries 4.7 grade point average, which places her within the top 10-percent of her senior class.

Add to her enormous academic and athletic endeavors, Wesson also plays piano with a 10-year history of taking lessons. “Yes, I’ve come a long way with the piano,” said Wesson. “I like to play classical pieces.”
