Summer Knights tourney adds a twist for 2018

MADISON – Summer Knights Scholastic Chess Tournament on Aug. 25 will be the first chess competition of the 2018-2019 school year in Madison.

“We’re trying something new,” Ranae Bartlett said. Bartlett is Executive Director of Madison City Chess League.

“Although we are offering both a Rated section (for those with a U.S. Chess Federation rating) and a Non-Rated section for beginning players, we will not issue a tournament report to the USCF,” Bartlett said.

“So, this (tournament) is an opportunity for everyone to relax, not worry about ratings, but play in their first chess tournament early in the school year to help prepare for the State Championship in Birmingham over Labor Day weekend,” she said.

Tellini’s Italiano will cater lunch. Rainbow Chess Club will provide concessions.

CB&S Bank is tournament sponsor.

Rainbow Elementary School will host the Summer Knights Scholastic Chess Tournament. “We’re so excited to get started with our first chess tournament. We plan to have fun as we welcome both experienced and first-time tournament players to Rainbow elementary,” Bartlett said.

The event will open with a mandatory meeting for players at 9 a.m. Round times (approximate) will start at 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. Non-rated sections are likely to start sooner after the first round.

Game time for Rated sections will be G/30/d5. Non-Rated sections will have G/20. Pairing will be 5SS.

In Rated sections, players will vie for awards in categories for K-12 (Open); K-12 Under 1,000; and K-12 Under 500. Students will receive trophies for first through third places. Fourth- through sixth-place winners, along with top female, will earn medals. Only Rated sections are required to have USCF membership.

In Non-Rated sections, winners in categories K-12, K-6 and K-3 will be eligible for prizes. The first-place winner will earn a trophy. Medals will be based on enrollment; the top female also will receive a medal.

Registration fee through Aug. 23 is $20 for MCCL members and $25 for players who aren’t members. “The lower MCCL member price will appear when you add the tournament to your cart,” Bartlett said. To join MCCL, visit madisonchess.com/join.

Registration deadline is Aug. 22. To register, visit madisonchess.com/events/283/2018-summer-knights-chess-tournament-825.
MCCL’s mailing address is P.O. Box 843, Madison, AL 35758. For more information, email mccl.director@gmail.com or visit madisonchess.com.
