Governor’s Job Fair for People with Disabilities coming to Huntsville Oct. 25

HUNTSVILLE — October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and the Huntsville Career Center will be hosting a job fair for people with disabilities Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Von Braun Center.

The Governor’s Job Fair for People with Disabilities, which is in its second year, is being held in north Alabama for the first time. The job fair seeks to give priority to veterans and those with disabilities to find jobs in the community. Applicants are encouraged to dress professionally, bring several copies of their résumés and be prepared to interview.

“Alabamians want to work, and that includes those with disabilities,” said Fitzgerald Washington, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Labor in a news release. “… Our mission at ADOL is to match employers with employees, and that’s what we will do.”

According to the release, more than 1,100 jobseekers and nearly 100 employers came to the first Governor’s Job Fair for People with Disabilities, which was held in Birmingham last year.

“The City of Huntsville is focused on generating jobs for our hardworking community, and that includes jobs for those with disabilities,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle in the release. “I am committed as mayor of Huntsville that anyone who wants to work should have the opportunity to secure a job.”

This year’s event is a partnership between the following entities: the Alabama Career Center System/Alabama Department of Labor, the Governor’s Office on Disability, the Alabama Department of Rehab Services, the Alabama Department of Mental Health, the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, United Ability and the City of Huntsville.

NDEAM’s 2018 theme is “America’s Workforce: Empowering All.” The campaign aims to raise awareness about the employment issues for disabled people across the country. It also celebrates those workers with disabilities and their contributions to the United States and its workforce.

“We are only successful when we are successful together,” said Alabama Governor Kay Ivey in the release.

The job fair is free for both jobseekers and employers. To pre-register for the event as a jobseeker or employer, visit www.labor.alabama.gov/jobfair. Those that pre-register are “strongly encouraged” to print the confirmation they receive and bring it with them for faster entry.

The facility will also be accessible, but if further accommodations are required, contact the Huntsville Career Center at huntsville@alcc.alabama.gov or 256-851-0537.

The Von Braun Center is located at 700 Monroe St. SW in Huntsville.
