Queen’s Quest open to all young chess players

MADISON – The largest chess tournament in Madison, Queen’s Quest 2018 has been scheduled for Nov. 17 at Mill Creek Elementary School. Registration is now open.

“Queen’s Quest also is our first individual and team tournament of the year. More individual awards will be handed out as we have created an additional primary section for our youngest competitors,” Ranae Bartlett said. Bartlett is Executive Director of Madison City Chess League.

In any section, the top four scores from any school comprise the team score.

“Queen’s Quest is an open tournament for any competitor in grades K-12 from any public, private or home school, and the only membership required is a current United State Chess Federation membership,” Bartlett said. To buy a USCF membership, visit uschess.org.

This tournament offers only Rated sections: K-3 U300; K-3 Championship; K-5 Championship; K-8 Jr High; and K-12 Open. Tournament officials will use a player’s official, published rating as of Nov. 1 to assign sections.

After a mandatory players meeting at 9:15 a.m., rounds will open at 9:30 a.m., followed by 11 a.m. and 12:30, 2:15 and 3:30 p.m. The time control will be Game 30/d5.

Entry fee is $25 per individual. Deadline for online registration is Nov. 14. Officials will not register any player onsite at the event.

In individual awards, the Top 10 individuals will receive trophies in K-3 U300, K-3 Championship, K-5 Championship and K-8 Junior High, along with Top 5 individuals in K-12 Open. For a tie score for trophies, the individual who loses on the tiebreak will receive a medal.

In team awards, trophies will be presented to the top four teams in K-3 U300, K-3 Championship and K-5 Championship sections. The top two teams in K-8, Junior High and K-12 Open sections will receive trophies.

Players can pre-order souvenir Queen’s Quest T-shirts until noon on Nov. 2 to wear at the tournament. The price is $10 for MCCL members; for others, the price is $15. To order, visit madisonchess.com.
