Huntsville Ballet, Symphony to present ‘The Nutcracker’

MADISON – Huntsville Ballet Company and Huntsville Symphony Orchestra will once again tell the cherished story of Christmas through the eyes of a little girl.

The talented dancers and musicians will present “The Nutcracker” in Mark C. Smith Concert Hall of Von Braun Center on Dec. 7-9.

Before those public performances, students in Huntsville City Schools, along with schools across Madison County, have been invited to specially scheduled shows. In addition, military personnel and their families can attend a complimentary performance on Dec. 6.

Madison residents who are members of the Community Ballet Board are Debbie Baughn, Garrett Estes and Robert Salinas. Company members from Madison who are dancing principal roles are Ashley Jordan and Jillian Pennell.

Ashley Jordan is dancing the role of Sugar Plum Fairy.

Show dates for “The Nutcracker” are Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m.; Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. In addition, a benefit performance on Dec. 9 at 5 p.m. will not include the symphony for reduced tickets at $15.

Tickets are available at VBC Box Office or online at Ticketmaster.com. Ticket price varies by seating location in the concert hall.

This production of “The Nutcracker” is set in the 1850s in Huntsville. The show has a traditional feel, thanks to the Huntsville history sets and elaborate antebellum-style costumes, spokesperson Annelle Craig said.

Phillip Otto, Artistic Director of Huntsville Ballet Company, worked closely with David Harwell, theater program director at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, to remake the sets of the annual holiday performance and commemorate Community Ballet Association’s 50th year.

The Huntsville Ballet Company and Huntsville Ballet School function under the umbrella of Community Ballet Association Inc., a non-profit member of the state and local arts councils that was established in 1963.

Huntsville Ballet’s office address is 800 Regal Drive in Huntsville. For more information, call 256-539-0961, email CompanyManager@huntsvilleballet.org or visit huntsvilleballet.org.
