Jaylyn Freeman Named All Region Volleyball At Gadsden State

GADSDEN- Jaylyn Freeman of Gadsden State Community College has been named to the 2018 Volleyball All-Region First Team as part of the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC). The former Sparkman High player is a freshman for the Lady Cardinals.

“I was shocked to learn of the honor as there are so many good teammates and opponents who could have easily been chosen for the All-Region Team,” said Freeman. “I do like the feeling of being on the All Region Team. It’s great.”

The daughter of James and Marlo Freeman began playing volleyball in the sixth grade as she was led into the sport as both her mother and older sister played volleyball. Freeman also played basketball, but gave up that sport in her sophomore year at Sparkman to concentrate fulltime on volleyball. Freeman said volleyball became her main passion and felt the sport was more of a natural fit for her physically and mentally.

The 5-foot-4 defensive specialist for the Lady Cardinals is studying business administration and would one day like to continue her second passion of being a pastry chef. “Yes, I’d love to open my own pastry business as I love baking,” said Freeman. “I started making cakes for others and soon I received requests for my baking goods.”

Freeman is also an artist with sketching and painting her expertise. She has many of her works hanging in her dorm room. She’s even had others offer to buy her artistry.

For the fourth year-in-a-row Freeman has endured the results of pain of her left Achilles tendon, which she first injured as a sophomore at Sparkman. Freeman said of her injury. “I push through the pain I have since I first suffered the injury. Not playing volleyball is something I don’t want to do. If I were to stop playing, it would really take a big part of me. I love volleyball.”
