Voeten shows her designs during 2020 Fashion Week Alabama

MADISON – Young Madison designer Lizzy Voeten, 17, continued to define her niche as a designer during 2020 Fashion Week Alabama.

Voeten is a junior at James Clemens High School.

“Lizzy Voeten keeps moving forward in the fashion world as a designer. After a successful show at the 2019 Fashion Week Alabama, she created a new high fashion line called ‘Livashion’” for the 2020 show on March 5-8, Lizzy’s mother Laura Voeten said.

Livashion featured Voeten’s eight pieces, inspired by different flowers. The collection informs people about nature’s beauty and how people should protect it and allow it to flourish.

Alabama Fashion Alliance presented Fashion Week for the ninth year. The event involves four days of runway fashion and networking for fashion influencers.

Several designers from across the United States and local retailers opened the shows on March 6 at Century BMW Showroom in Huntsville. The venue transitioned to the University of Alabama’s Shelby Center on March 7.

Also that day, Voeten participated in the Avant Garde Competition, which features creativity, diversity and sewing techniques, while uniting the fashion community. Eight models showed her designs. Lizzy’s siblings — two younger brothers and her sister — and Laura were on the catwalk. Dallas LaGrand, Yudam Jeong, Sophia Hughes and Lexi Lee walked for Lizzy.

Lizzy works closely together with AFA photographers, like Vic Vergara and Derrick Williams. “It’s about working together with creative minds. And producing great products. Together with AFA, Lizzy helps to grow the fashion platform,” Laura said.

In 2019, Voeten competed in the premiere Alabama Tank Style Designer contest. As their youngest contestant, she was a finalist, tasked to design, create and present a three-piece, ready-to-wear.

In addition, Voeten collaborates with fashion retailers, like Kendra Scott in Bridge Street. She complements each design with Kendra Scott jewelry. Voeten uses most supplies from JOANN Fabrics.

The Voetens are an Air Force family from the Netherlands. Lizzy is bilingual, straight ‘A’ student, active in several school clubs and, not surprisingly, enrolls in all the art classes she can get. She also completes alterations, designs and makes prom dresses.

“With Lizzy’s artistic skills, perseverance, kindness and positive attitude, Lizzy will explore more of the USA fashion world. Maybe one day a Fashion Week in New York? That’s her big dream!” Laura said.
