FATAL HIT-AND-RUN UPDATE: Possible suspect claims they were unsure what they hit
MADISON – The Limestone County Sheriff’s Department released some new information in the hit-and-run last week that left a 16-year-old Madison teen dead.
“The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office has received information regarding the possible suspect regarding the previous East Limestone Rd. hit and run accident,” a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office stated Tuesday night. “We have been advised by said suspect that they are unsure of what their vehicle struck. Limestone County has given this information to ALEA/ SBI and they have confirmed receiving this information. ALEA Is working the case and will follow-up. We would like to thank everyone for the tips and information.”
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 19, when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle that left the scene.
Authorities say the wreck occurred on East Limestone Road, about a 1/4 mile north of the intersection of East Limestone Road and Nick Davis Road.
The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified by family and friends as Mason Cozelos, a student at James Clemens High School and a popular employee at Lawlers Barbecue on Hughes Road in Madison.
Mason’s funeral is set for Saturday, Aug. 28, at Asbury Church at 11 a.m. Visitation is Friday evening, Aug. 27, at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home in Madison. Legacy Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
