Huntsville man charged with murder after fatal shooting on Martin Road

HUNTSVILLE – A Huntsville man has been arrested and charged with murder following a shooting Monday evening at an apartment complex near Redstone Arsenal’s gate 7.

The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) arrested 22-year-old Byron Alexander Peterson in connection with the death of 53-year-old Demetrius Jones.

On March 3, just after 6 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in progress at 240 Martin Road near Zeirdt Road. Upon arrival, they found Jones in the doorway of his apartment with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Major Crimes Unit Investigators determined that Peterson and Jones, who lived in the same apartment complex, had an ongoing dispute for several months. On Monday, Peterson went to Jones’ apartment where an argument between the two escalated, leading to the shooting. Peterson was located moments later in a nearby apartment and detained.

A handgun in Jones’ apartment and a handgun in Peterson’s apartment were located and taken from the scene as the investigation continues.
