Madison Board of Education proceeds with superintendent search

MADISON – Since the end of May, Madison Board of Education has been searching for a qualified candidate to fill the vacancy for Superintendent of Madison City Schools.

On May 29, board members approved the search process, publication of a vacancy notice and a brochure. They posted a notice at all schools, work sites and the MCS website, along with submissions to professional groups across Alabama and in other states.

The board accepted applications from June 1 through July 1. On June 16, the board named Eric Terrell as Interim Superintendent. In a June 25 work session, board members finalized interview questions for applicants.

According to their schedule, the board narrowed the field of applicants to recommended finalists during the first week of July. Background checks of finalists were completed during July 7-14.

The board intends to announce finalists and scheduled interviews on July 16. Interviews will proceed from July 24 to July 30. Before or after interviews, meet-and-greet gatherings will be available.

From July 24 to Sept. 1, board members will pursue negotiations and signing of the superintendent’s contract. The new superintendent will start to work during this timeframe.

The board prefers the candidate to have a doctorate’s degree or other advanced degree from a recognized college or university program, along with experience as a su- perintendent, assistant superintendent, secondary- school level principal or a combination of these positions.

In other general requirements, the candidate must be a proactive thinker with an understanding of complex organizations and economic changes. The minimum salary for MCS Superintendent is $250,000, plus benefits that are negotiable based on the candidate’s experience.
