PTA program promotes artistry

Madison's elementary schools are preparing for the program.

The National PTA’s objective is to “encourages all students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts “Reflections” program.”

This year’s theme, “Together We Can…” will require visual, as well as artistic creativity in all students participating.

Students participating in the program may submit entries in one or all of the six categories: visual art, literature, film production, musical composition, photography and dance choreography. Each entry will be judged on interpretation of the theme with special attention paid to creativity and artistic merit.

“I’m so glad that PTA Reflections gives any child the chance to express themselves,” said Christine Wright, program co-chair at Mill Creek Elementary. “This is through six different areas, not just the visual, as one might assume. The fact that these children could have some hidden potential that no one has even known to tap into is so exciting.”

The program requirements state that adults should not alter or influence the creative integrity of the child’s work. The top five entries for each category and each age division from each school will go on to compete at the city level and maybe even state and national levels.

“Hopefully, each entry will be not just a single offering, but rather, the beginning of a child’s development in new found talent,” Wright said. “These kids have so little time in school to appreciate all the arts and music have to offer.  As a music instructor, I’ve seen how these fields enrich all facets of a child’s life.  I am blessed to be a part of that, and hope that Reflections will give this same blessing to others.”

Madison City PTA will also have drawings and prizes for all participants.  Winners from West Madison will compete on the city level.  For more information, please visit the Alabama PTA Reflections website.
