Madison city to host Clean-up day
Begin your community involvement by participating in “Madison Clean Up Day.” The entire community is invited to come together to clean up the streets and keep the quality of life and the presentation of the city impeccable.
When fifth-grader Becca Fraley learned she needed to complete a community service project, she had no idea it would become a city-wide event.
Fraley’s idea to pick up trash around town has spawned “Madison Clean Up Day” from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 21. The entire community, including businesses and residents, are invited to come together to clean the city’s streets.
“My mom and I were driving down the street one day and we didn’t like the trash we saw on the side of the road,” Fraley said. “So I took the idea to my Eco-kids class and told my teacher about it and she said take it to the mayor. We’re glad he decided he would jump on board with us.”
The clean-up day is being supported by the Madison Chamber of Commerce, Madison City Schools, local apartment complexes, Madison HOA Network, civic organizations, churches, businesses and local volunteers.
“This is for anyone who wants to make a difference in the community,” said Madison Mayor Paul Finley. “You can get on a team or you could put a team together yourself. It’s a street at a time, a park at a time, and an area at a time. If everyone takes a little piece, boy, we’d make a huge difference in our city.”
All participants will meet at Horizon Elementary at 8 a.m., where clean-up supplies, maps, and specific instructions will be provided. Rocket City Sitters will provide free childcare.
