Herschel Y. Stephens; July 15, 2011

Herschel Y. Stephens, 85, of Madison, died peacefully at his home Friday, July 15.

He was a kind, compassionate and gentle soul who loved and was loved by his family, friends and all who knew him. Herschel was devoted to his family and loved to spend time with this children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed hanging out with his golf buddies. He was a talented artist who spent 40 years as a Technical Illustrator, retiring from Chrysler Corp. after 23 years of dedicated service. In addition, Mr. Stephens served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during WWII.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Lois Irene; twin brother Herman Stephens; son, Ronald Pittman; sisters, Inez McNabb and May Minugh; and parents, Herman and Wilmina Stephens.

Survivors include brother, Sam Stephens of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughters, Cathy McLaughin of Moore, Okla. and Deanna Glover of Harvest; son, Kent Pittman of Harvest; grandchildren, John McLaughlin, Penny Jones, Patti Pike, Natalie Foldenauer and Chris and Sarah Pittman; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 18 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 19 in the chapel with the Rev. Tommy Bolen officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
