DoDEA partnership awards $1.3 million grant Madison schools
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Educational Partnership awarded a $1, 350,000 grant to the Madison City School (MCS) District through the FY 11 Grant Program.
The School District serves students whose parents are assigned to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville.
“The Department of Defense is strongly committed to ensuring that the children of military families receive an excellent education that prepares them for successful careers and to be active contributors to their communities and the nation,” said Marilee Fitzgerald, DoDEA Acting Director. “Our partnerships with public schools serving military-connected families are an important part of that commitment.”
The grant will fund an innovative K-6 academic program, “The Madison Math Initiative” to improve student achievement in, technology, engineering and math subjects. It will also fund a K-6 support program, “The Caring Community” to meet the social-emotional challenges associated with the relocation and parental deployment of K-6 military connected students.
“Madison City is very excited to partner with DoDEA as we implement SOS, Strategies of Success, for our Pre K – 6th grade students,” said Dr. Dee Fowler, superintendent of Madison City Schools.
All grants focus on enhancing student learning opportunities, student achievement, and educator professional development at military-connected schools. Some grants also have a counseling component that focuses on easing the challenges that military students face due to transitions and deployments.
