Bob Jones’ Colson makes it five signings for girl’s basketball

Madison-  Bob Jones head girl’s basketball coach Tim Miller knew this year’s team was talented. On Monday he found out just how much talent was on the team that advanced to the AHSAA Championship Game in Birmingham.

Katie Colson, a power forward who was the sixth player and first off the bench most of the season, signed an athletic scholarship to play basketball at the University of Montevallo. She also earned an academic scholarship from Montevallo to complement her athletic scholarship.

Colson was a member of the Bob Jones team that won the state championship her junior year. This year she came off the bench and used her size to help with rebounding. Her best game of the season was against Decatur when she scored 10 points, all in the fourth quarter.  He earned a start against Hoover in the championship game and led the team in scoring at the half with 5 points.

She becomes the fifth girl’s basketball player this year to sign to play in college.

“I started looking at schools in my junior year and tried to get the recruitment process going. We looked at Montevallo and I liked it and we just kept going after it. The head coach came to watch us play and we made one final visit and she made her offer there,” Colson said.

Colson will play for women’s head basketball coach Cindy Hilbrich.  Montevallo plays in Division II in the Peach Belt Conference.

‘It’s a good academic school,’ said Colson who had a number of academic scholarship offers because of her extremely high ACT score and GPA. “I want to go into the medical field,” Colson said.

Another member of the girl’s basketball team signed last week. DeAisha Campbell signed a scholarship to go to Florida State Junior College in Jacksonville, Florida.

“When you got girls that come in and work hard and have a commitment to basketball and the classroom then good things like this happen,” said Bob Jones head girl’s basketball coach Tim Miller. Miller has now had 14 girls sign scholarships to play basketball in college in the last 5 years.

“One of my goals as coach is to get the girls what they want,” Miller said. “If they want to play basketball at the next level then we try to get that. If they want to go to be a doctor or lawyer then we try to get them to a school where they can make that happen, either academically or through basketball.”

“Montevallo is a great school. They’ve got a new coach who has been there only two years. I think Katie will fit in there very well,” Miller said.

Another of Millers players, Jasmine Jones, was recognized for her selection as Gatorade Player of the Year and last week she was named Girls Basketball 6A Player of the Year by the Alabama Sportswriters Association. Jones has already signed to play for the Univeristy of Tennessee.

Bob Jones High School Principal Robby Parker presided over the unveiling of the banner that will hang in the gym alongside Levi Randoph’s banner from last year.

“The entire state was watching you last week at the ceremony and you showed a lot of maturity, you made us proud,” Parker said. “The city of Madison is proud of you and Bob Jones High School is proud of you. You have always represented us well and we are going to be watching you on TV as you continue playing at Tennessee.”
