Bob Jones sweeps home volleyball match

Jeneva Salter and Taylor Whitworth on a block against Buckhorn

The Bob Jones volleyball team is still undefeated at home this season after defeating Hartselle and Buckhorn in a tri-match on Tuesday night.

After sweeping Hartselle 25-22 and 25-17 the Lady Patriots had their backs against the wall against Buckhorn. The Lady Bucks took advantage of a young Bob Jones team that is still searching for the right combinations and dominated early by winning game one 25-19.

Buckhorn’s length and effective serving gave Bob Jones problems.

Bob Jones head coach April Marsh regrouped her girls during the timeout and the Lady Patriots came out swinging and never trailed again. Jasmyn Wright and Erin Shockey had key digs to keep points alive and eventually the spikes came from front line hitters Alexis Howell and Jeneva Salter. Both teams made some impressive runs but Bob Jones took the second game 25-22.

Bob Jones dominated the third and deciding game. The Lady Patriots ran off seven straight points to take a commanding lead and the game ended on the 10 point rule 15-5.

“I was proud of them,” April Marsh said after the game. “We’re young and inconsistent at times but there at the end you would not have known it. Our defense stepped up and made some big plays in the second game.”

The digs extended points and allowed the net players to get back in rhythm with the kills.

“Offensively we had some players step up. Jeneva and Alexis had some big plays for us at the net swinging hard and being aggressive and putting some balls away for us.”

Alex King led the team in assists with 28 and was followed by Erin Shockey with 14. Salter led Bob Jones with 16 kills followed by Alexis Howell with 11.

Howell, who plays much taller than her 5-foot-4 frame led the team with 5 blocks.

“Buckhorn has got a good team, we did a good job to compete and beat them,” said Marsh.

The Patriots have lost matches to some of the top teams in the state such as Mountain Brook, St. Pauls, and Huntsville.

Next week the Lady Patriots swing into Area 15 play against Sparkman at home on Sept. 6.
