Mustangs gallop into semi-finals

BY SCOTT WRIGHT / FOR THE RECORD

The Madison Academy Mustangs are only one win away from a return trip to the state finals in 3A football after taking care of Colbert County Friday night 66-28.

The Mustangs were lead by two incredible performances, one from sophomore Kerryon Johnson and the other from freshman Malik Miller.

Johnson, a well-known name in all classifications of football in the state of Alabama, racked up 235 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including a run eerily reminiscent of Trent Richardson’s “juke” at Ole Miss just one year ago.

Miller, a name many in Alabama had better get used to hearing, rushed for 125 yards and four touchdowns, and even picked up a fumble to score late in the game for his fifth touchdown.

These two players have given Madison Academy something to cheer about each and every time they touch the ball.

Friday night’s game truly came down to a penalty. With the Mustangs leading 38-22 and facing a 4th down and eleven, the Colbert County sideline was flagged for being on the field. This was ruled a personal foul penalty and gave the Mustangs an automatic first down.

Following the penalty, the Mustangs scored a touchdown, recovered a fumble for a touchdown, recovered an unintentional onside kick and score a touchdown, and converted a fourth down stop into their final touchdown.

In approximately three minutes of game time, Madison Academy took a close game and turned it into a runaway.

In what was truly a wild game from start to finish, the Mustangs asserted themselves as the dominant team in the northern part of the state.

Following Lauderdale County’s 21-7 victory over Deshler, we now know it will be a rematch at Bill Washington Stadium next Friday night as the Tigers of Lauderdale County will travel to Madison to take on the Mustangs. To the winner goes the prize of playing for a state championship on the field at Jordan-Hare Stadium on the campus of Auburn University.
