Bob Jones girls hitting their stride, top James Clemens again

This is the time of year a coach wants their team to be playing their best. For Coach Danny Petty, that is exactly what the Bob Jones girl’s basketball team is doing.

On Jan. 18 against crosstown rival James Clemens, the Patriots posted a 48-30 victory to sweep the season series against the Jets.

The addition of Chloe Long who became eligible the second semester has solidified the lineup for Petty. Long, a sophomore who is over 6 foot tall has moved right into the starting lineup. She gives Bob Jones the size to go along with guard play and outside shooting they already had.

“She is our tallest player so we needed the size she brings,” Petty said. “By the time she goes through a good off-season she can be a special player.”

Long had one of her best games with 14 points against James Clemens. Chandler Elder continued her hot shooting as she finished the game with 19 points.

Senior Lindsey Jennings had only 4 points but contributed in other ways Petty said.

“She distributed the ball and played defense. That is what it takes to win ballgames,” Petty said of Jennings who holds several offers but remains uncommitted on where she will play college basketball. Her sister is a freshman point guard at UNA.

Elder is a junior who has been lighting up the scoreboard this season averaging 15 points per game. She hit three three-point shots against James Clemens.

“We can play with anybody if our shooters are on. Sometimes we are a little streaky. The consistency has been our defense all year,” Petty said.

Bob Jones is now 22-3 and ranked in the top five in the state but unfortunately for the Patriots two of the losses came against in Area 15 games against top-ranked Sparkman. So barring a major upset, Sparkman will host the Area 15 tournament.
