MADISON – Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have presented David Hergenroeder with not one but three citizenship awards.

A Bob Jones High School senior, Hergenroeder won the DAR Good Citizenship Award at local chapter, district and state levels and has advanced to southeastern division competition.

Hergenroeder and his family attended a DAR luncheon on Feb. 7 at Huntsville Country Club for his award from the Hunt Spring Chapter. “However, at the end of the ceremony, David discovered he had also won the regional and state awards,” Sheila Roberts said. Roberts is college and career advisor at Bob Jones.

For the award, Hergenroeder had to write a timed essay, supervised by monitors, about preservation of American heritage.

Hergenroeder ranks in the top of the Class of 2013. “David even has taken some advance placement exams without taking the courses and made highest possible scores,” Roberts said. “More than a brilliant student, he is also an Eagle scout, regional Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Award winner, National Merit Finalist, Presidential Scholar nominee and People to People International ambassador to Italy, Spain, Monaco and France.”

Last summer, Hergenroeder succeeded with his National Student Language Initiative for Youth application with the U.S. State Department. He spent seven weeks in Beijing to learn Mandarin Chinese and promote cultural awareness in various cities and regions of China.

Raised in a military family, he moved frequently until settling in Madison when he was a fourth-grader. His parents are David Hergenroeder, program manager at the Missile Defense Agency, and Melanie Hergenroeder, a homemaker. His brother John graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2011. His sister Laura is attending the University of Alabama.

An avid sportsman, David plays soccer and is an award winner in varsity cross-country and track. He is involved with student government and Spanish Club. In spare time, he enjoys reading and spending time with friends.
